Forget islands. Is there a revival of tables in eat-in kitchens?
Apartment Therapy recently blogged about this great modern eat-in kitchen by Grant Gibson at Elle Decor's New York Showhouse. It's a throwback to the days of casual kitchens when tables, instead of islands, were the gathering spot.
It made me wonder, are tables in kitchens making a comeback? And are islands not as conducive to happy living and functional design?
Tables at the center of kitchens used to be the norm, and for many country kitchens, it still is. My parents' kitchen still has a table in the middle of it, and I have to say it works really well. My brother and I grew up at that table - it served as the dinner spot, homework station, card-playing zone, and central hub for chatting with family and company. Still today, it's where we gather and have momentous talks. It's relaxed and truly the heart of the home.
I wonder if an island can really do the same thing? Don't get me wrong- I love an island andthe prep space it offers, along with seating for quick meals and breakfasts. It's also great for entertaining friends while the cook prepares a meal. But for leisurely, casual, comfortable, enjoyable times, it probably can't provide the same experience.
I'm a big believer that a home has to function well and be meaningful, thereby enabling simple, comfortable and purposeful living. Good design not only looks good, it feels good too and promotes wonderful experiences. And so designing an eat-in kitchen with a central table might just make sense once again.
