DIY Tech Charging Station - And Why You Need One

Phone and tech charging stations have become a must for our homes. Technology is a prominent part of our lives, and so we need to dedicate a piece of our home to it.  But not just to keep them safe and charged, to also keep us sane and healthy.

We live in a fast, wired, busy, distracted society for most hours of the day. So when we're home, we need to distance ourselves from our phones and screens to get perspective and to mentally and physically de-stress. Continually being attached to our phones buzzing and pinging wreaks havoc with our ability to be mindful, and it interferes with deep sleep. In addition, our electronics are constantly emitting EMFs which, over the long haul, can be dangerous to our physical health.

Therefore, we need to ensure that our phones and computers don't drift with us into our bedrooms, to the dinner table, or to our laps when we’re relaxing. Dedicating a specific area in the home where we can drop our tech is an easy way to simplify our lives and gain more peace.

I purchased a desk organizer, wrapped it in wallpaper and punched two holes in the side and back for charging cords.

HOW TO SET UP A HOME TECH CHARGING STATION

I used white duct tape to secure the charging cords to the back of the tray and into a power bar below the desk.

  • Choose an area that's convenient but not in quiet personal or family areas like bedrooms, living rooms or dining rooms. Bedrooms, in particular, should be screen-free zones. Perhaps you can find space on a table in the entryway, in an office, or even in a hallway or a kitchen desk zone.

  • Make sure an outlet is nearby, obviously, and use a power bar so that you can turn the whole bar off and stop wasting energy running to the phone charging cords when not in use.

  • Keep the cords out of sight with tape, twist ties or paper clips.

  • DIY a cardboard box that holds multiple tablets and phones (see photo 1)

    OR

  • simply use a tray to corral everything all together and keep it neatly in one spot (see photo 2)

    OR

  • drill a hole inside a cabinet or chest of drawers and keep the electronics out of sight (see photo inspiration below)

    OR

  • purchase one, like this one from Etsy.

Regardless of what you use, get your phones out of your beds, off your nightstands, out from under the cushions of the sofa, off your lap, away from the dinner table and out of reach. You'll be much happier and calmer once you do.
